Shawnee Cabin going up!

Posted by phil

It didn’t take long for our new friends to throw up a floor system and the walls on the new Shawnee Cabin. They did all this work in only 2 days! It won’t be long and I’ll have some pictures with the roof on and a covered porch. Check back soon…

Also, they have poured the footers for the Spilman Lodge addition. It should be any day that they come back and start putting the floor system in. I’ll be sure to add some pictures soon…

  1. So much of it is up already. Very impressive! I would like to say that the entrance “ladder” doesn’t seem very safe. I mean, an Arap might be able to handle that… but a Shawnee… really??

I am curious about what the porch is going to be like. When I walked around camp over Thanksgiving some of the newer cabins looked pretty close together. Any chance that their porches will be connected. Either way would be sweet–just curious.

Also, what are the thoughts about the current cabin 9. It’s still going to be a Shawnee cabin, right? Is there going to be anything put there so it seems more connected to Shawnee Hill rather than Choctaw Hill?

Things are looking great. See ya’ll over Christmas break…

  2. We thought the entrance ladder made it more “campy” … don’t worry, Ron will build the steps later this week.

All the new porches will be covered porches with 6×6 timbers and benches very similar to the existing porches. They are very nice and add something really cool to the cabins…we hope to add covered porches to all the cabins as we continue the project.

And yes, we have thought about cabin 9. We are open to ideas, but we do know that the Happy Place (old staff housing) which will become a camper cabin this summer has a porch facing cabin 9 currently. We plan to move the door to the other side of the cabin so that the porch will be facing Cabin 10, and not a Shawnee Cabin. Again, this will not be ready for this summer, but will be completed in following summers when we continue to renovate the cabins. Part of this depends on donations that Camp received in support of the project. I hope this was helpful….

We hope to see you at reunion!

  3. I have no particular insight to offer about this cabin. But I just want to say that I’m sitting here at the computer with a ridiculous, unstoppable grin on my face as I think of the Shawnee tribe expanding. Yes, the Shawnee tribe, that best of all tribes, that quintessential example of an age group at camp, is expanding. Indeed, it was inevitable — eventually the word of Shawnee greatness was bound to escape and demand for attendance would exceed available space. And now, the time has come. Happy day! May Shawnee excellence continue, its glory unfading and unabating, its example shining forth like a beacon in the night. Verily, verily, hallelujah, amen.
