Retro Friday: Lake Ridgecrest
Posted by KarahMany of the activities that campers look forward to each year revolve around the lake. Blob wars, the rope swing, zip lines, canoeing, paddle boarding, and now the aqua climb are part of what makes camp fun! With the Blue Ridge Mountains set in the background, Lake Ridgecrest is arguably one of the prettiest views around, and has been known for its beautiful scenery since the camp opened in 1929. Most of us have probably even taken a picture by the Lake Ridgecrest sign when we’ve visited in the off season or returned to camp for another summer (Instagram anyone?!)
Even though the blob and the rope swing are staples of Lake Ridgecrest, they haven’t always been around. In fact, the lake use to look a lot different than it does now! The “P dock” was on the side of the lake where the canoes are kept, roping off a swimming area. The pictures shown here are actually even before we had the P dock! Check out what the swimming area use to look like before 1942. This camper is sitting where the water slide comes out today. Do you remember when the lake looked like this? What have been some of your favorite activities in Lake Ridgecrest? Comment below!

Put to Death
Posted by KarahThink for a moment about the sinful actions, attitudes, and thoughts from which God has saved you. Focus your heart by praising and thanking Him for saving you, forgiving you, and protecting you.
“For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.”
—Colossians 3:3
Read Colossians 3:1-10 in your Bible.
• Read verse 3 again carefully. Write it in your own words.
• Based on what you have learned about God’s wrath the past few weeks, why does His wrath come on the disobedient who live immoral lives?
• According to these verses, what sins should you put away as a believer?
• If you’re a Christian, God has forgiven your sin, and you no longer face His righteous wrath against sin. So, why should you put these things away, if you’re already saved from God’s wrath? Explain.
Respond
• Look back at the sins listed in verses 6, 8-10. Which sins are still part of your life? Remember, you can be sinning in your thought life, even if you aren’t physically participating. Confess these sins to God, asking Him to help you remove them from your life, once and for all.
• Be aware of the temptations that trigger these sins in your life. List ways you will deal with these temptations when they pop up in your life. Jot down one or two actions you’ll put into practice today.
Behind the Story
The Book of Colossians is a letter Paul wrote to the church at Colosse. False teachers had tried to convince the Colossian believers that true spirituality required obtaining knowledge, adhering to certain rules, or having spiritual experiences. Paul directly opposed this teaching by reminding the believers that their life is hidden with Christ. He alone is their salvation. He alone is sufficient.
The Point
Because God is holy and we are His, we should continue to put away sinfulness so that we will become more like Him.

The Galdiators Return to Camp Ridgecrest
Posted by philIt all begins with the sound of an old rams horn echoing throughout camp, followed by a charge of central staff dressed as Gladiators surrounding the campers at Retreat. Everyone is then escorted into Spilman Lodge where they take part in a massive feast on 4 large banquet tables! The teams are already separated and their colors are waiting for them on their chairs! They eat with no plates or utensils, but enjoy foot-long Turkey Legs, chicken legs, tater-tots, rolls, bug juice, corn on the cob and more. (Don’t worry, we had some PB&J for those who needed a little extra.)
From dinner they watch a 4 minute compilation of some of the greatest pump up movie excerpts of all time. After being led to the upper green and through a tunnel of torches, the young gladiators had several training exercises that you will see on the video, all leading up to a huge game of This Land is My Land where the young Gladiator do battle against their counselors! In the end, the campers were victorious and the night ended with a few energetic Gladiator Cheers! What a night! Take a look…
